$49.5 million for research in 2008-2009
The funds raised by The Daffodil Ball allow the Canadian Cancer Society to:
- Fund research. In 2008-2009, the CCS allocated $49.5 million for multifaceted research on various types of cancer. These funds enable scientists to discover new ways to understand, prevent, treat and diagnose cancer, as well as to offer more efficient treatments with fewer side effects and less aggressive surgeries.
- Become a leader in information. The CCS offers a wide variety of up-to-date information on cancer, treatments, prevention and available resources. This information is available via its Cancer Information Service at 1 888 939-3333, its website at cancer.ca and numerous publications.
- Offer support for people living with cancer (patients and their families). The CCS is there to enhance the quality of life of those living with cancer by offering emotional, material and financial support. Among those services are the Jacques-Cantin Lodge in Montreal and Cancer J’écoute, a telephone support program.
- Promote healthy lifestyles and strategies to reduce cancer risk.
- Advocate for healthy public policy and cancer control.
